Pita sighed. Of course. The lifeguards would be there. That was the only reason Mere went swimming. She fancied the new recruit.

The dog cowered on the ground. Could he trust this boy? He'd been hurt so often before. The boy crouched down to the dog's level.

"Come on, let me see your paw. I'll help you if I can."

The soothing, soft voice and the gentle look in the boy's eyes calmed the dog, and he shuffled forward on his belly towards the outstretched hand.

How it works

1. Pick a Story Starter topic from the list.

2. Write your own story, starting with the words that are shown inside the Story Starter box - 1,000 to 3,000 words long.

EITHER type it in a programe like Microsoft Word. When you have typed your story, check it for mistakes. Make any corrections. Then copy the whole story and paste it into the message panel of the contact form, found on this website. Fill in your name, email address, subject 'Story Starters' and the story starter topic you have chosen and press Send, and I will give you some feedback. Give me a few days to get back to you.

OR write your story with pencil/pen and paper and post it to me at: Jenni Francis, P.O. Box 89, Matakana 0948, New Zealand. New Zealand Writers please include a stamped, self addressed envelope so that I can send your story back to you, with my comments. Writers from outside New Zealand please type your stories and send it via the contact form.
